‘MPavillion, the Public Interior’, Extended
[Site: MPavillion 3 at Melbourne Zoo]
Study of existing MPavilion 3, designed by Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai, 2016
[Concept]
Inspired by the architectural elegance and materiality of the existing MPavilion, the proposed treetop walkway at Melbourne Zoo will seamlessly connect the MPavilion 3 to the Zoo’s aviary, offering visitors an immersive journey through the site.
The walkway will feature sustainable timber, blending harmoniously with the natural environment. Bamboo has been utilised as a building material for centuries, revered for its strength, versatility, and rapid growth. Its use spans across cultures and continents, from ancient Asian structures to modern sustainable architecture. Bamboo’s remarkable growth rate, reaching maturity in just a few years, makes it a highly renewable resource, significantly reducing the strain on forests and mitigating deforestation. The design ethos prioritises minimal environmental impact, echoing the MPavilion’s commitment to sustainability and innovative form. Visitors will experience a unique vantage point, enhancing their appreciation of the zoo’s avian inhabitants while promoting environmental awareness and conservation efforts.
[Proposal]
A Treetop Walkway to enhance MPavillion 3’s attractiveness as a convergence point.
